Global Musicology Revisited

Edited by Gavin S. K. Lee and Melanie Plesch

In this, our inaugural issue as editors of Musicological Brainfood, we revisit the concept of global musicology, hoping to foster a dialogue that is not only global in its reach but also inclusive in its approach. Musicology, as we understand it, is not a monolith but a mosaic, practiced and interpreted in all corners of the world, each piece colored by its unique traditions and different viewpoints. Central to this re-exploration is the question of what musicologists not based in the traditional academic “centers” think of the concept of “global musicology.” Their voices, often sidelined in mainstream musicological discourse, offer a different perspective, challenging the Eurocentric narratives that have long dominated the field.

A second, burning question is whether global musicology is just a fashionable term or a meaningful framework for understanding the complexities of our interconnected pasts. Musicologists from Asia, Africa, Latin America, Australasia, and other regions traditionally viewed as the “periphery,” can provide compelling insights into this dilemma, and encourage the discipline to rethink its established narrative and understanding of global historical processes.
