Imani Sanga

Imani Sanga is professor of music in the Department of Creative Arts at the University of Dar es Salaam (TZ), where he teaches courses on issues in African musicology, aesthetics, the music of Tanzania, and choral music performance. His research work has been published in leading journals in the fields of cultural musicology, African studies, popular music, cultural studies, as well as literary and postcolonial studies. He also serves on the editorial boards of the following academic journals: Journal of African Cultural Studies, Muziki-Journal of Music Research in Africa, Eastern African Literary and Cultural Studies, and UMMA Journal of Contemporary Literature and Creative Arts. He is a recipient of the following research fellowships: African Scholars Program (2007), African Humanities Program (2009), National Humanities Center (2019–20), Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin—Institute for Advanced Study (2024–25), and Israel Institute for Advanced Studies (2025–26). Currently, he is completing work on two book manuscripts: (1) “Sonic Letters, Decolonial Acts: Musical Figures, Swahili Literature and Anti-imperialist Struggles in Tanzania”; and (2) “Traveling Sounds: Glocal Mobilities, Music Hybridization, and Tanzanian Identities.”
